Advice on Going Directly to Merchants

Former affiliate manager here, worked with publishers to promote online education and career certifications in a variety of industries. Now, all these years later, I’m wanting to try my hand on the other side of the equation but I absolutely do not want to go through Amazon affiliate. And I know that if I go to the established programs on Shareasale, JVzoo or CJ it’ll be slim pickings, too.

Does anyone have experience going directly to the merchants? And if so, what is a trustworthy tracking system to use for these kinds of direct relationships? I would have used HasOffers several years ago but not sure what the best way for accountability on both sides of the equation would be these days.
